Main duties of the job
Do you have passion, enthusiasm and knowledge to lead and empower a team? Are you self-motivated and knowledgeable with 2 or more years of experience in Scrub, Anaesthetics or Recovery in the perioperative care setting? If so, we would like you to join our team within the Planned Care division.

As an experienced and skilled Theatre Practitioner, you will be required to provide leadership within the clinical area and provide direction and inspiration to the department.

You will be required to work closely within the multidisciplinary team of Anaesthetists, Surgeons and Theatre Staff covering a variety of specialities within Perioperative Care. You will be an integral part of a highly motivated team of practitioners in delivering the best of care to our patients and to continually promote innovation, using the latest technology to provide the highest level of care to a diverse population within the elective and emergency pathway.

Job description

Job responsibilities
Our team here in Medway Theatres and Day Care Centre comprises of experienced and Junior Nurses and ODPs, Care Support Workers, Anaesthetists and Surgeons, along with many other members of the MDT. We cover 10 main theatres including CEPOD and Trauma, 4 day surgery theatres and 2 obstetric theatres. We have a diverse workforce with each member bringing a unique and special talent.

As a senior practitioner, you will be visible and approachable with a drive to build on and improve standards utilising the Medway Institute for Improvement. You will also represent the department outside of theatres and liaise with team members across the Trust.

As an experienced nurse/ODP in scrub, post anaesthetic care or anaesthetics, you will assist in the management and organisation of work as required, you may have to deputise for Lead Theatre Practitioner and act as a role model for junior team members in the delivery of a high standard of perioperative care.

The role will encompass specific responsibilities for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating perioperative care and demonstrate expertise including recovery/ scrubbing / anaesthetics within the clinical area.

Person Specification


RN1/RN2/RN12 or RN Child Registered Nurse on the NMC register Or an Operating Department Practitioner on the Health Professionals Council

Diploma of Higher Education in Operating Department Practice or equivalent

Mentorship / teaching qualification


Proven post registration theatre experience ; including managing competencies, resources and staff

Experience of teaching / assessing / supervising others in an acute clinical setting


Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues


Able to assess plan, implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients / clients and give relevant advice / information

Ability to organise and plan own time and that of junior staff and learners
